Membership

Joining KAPS is easy. All you have to do is fill out the membership application based on your graduation year. Then pay membership dues to the KAPS organization indicated on the individual applications.

1. American Pharmacists Association - APhA-ASP

This organization focuses on improving medication use and advancing patient care through utilizing membership and resources in three academies:

Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management (APPM)
Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science (APRS)
Academy of Students of Pharmacy (ASP) - this is the branch of APhA that you will become a member of by joining KAPS

Publications you will receive as a member of APhA-ASP:

  • Pharmacy Today - reports news and opinions about current issues in the profession, with a special emphasis on pharmaceutical care. This is the official publication of APhA.
  • Pharmacy Student - tailored to the student pharmacist, this covers topics specifically related to us! For those interested in journalism, this provides a terrific opportunity to be published nationally.

American Pharmacists Association - Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP):

APhA-ASP also offers leadership development opportunities for students through regional and national student elections for positions such as Mid-Year Regional Meeting Coordinator, Regional Delegate, Regional Member-at-large, National Delegate, National Member-at-large, Speaker of the House and President
Students also have the opportunity to participate in APhA-ASP National Standing Committees such as: Publications, Education, Awards and Policy

2. Kentucky Pharmacists Association - KPhA

This is the state association affiliated with APhA. This association holds two meetings per year in the state of Kentucky and offers continuing education programs for pharmacists and students as well as the opportunity to become actively involved with current legislative issues. During the most recent state association meeting, UK students were given 13 delegate positions, providing students with the ability to vote on issues that affect our profession. In addition, students are encouraged to offer their ideas and opinions to the association by membership on several committees such as Professional Affairs, Public Affairs, Organizational Affairs and Bioterrorism Task Force.

3. American Society of Health-System Pharmacists - ASHP

This organization focuses on clinical pharmacy opportunities, including residencies and internships. This organization focuses on clinical pharmacy opportunities, including residencies and internships. ASHP also include pharmacists who practice in hospitals, HMO’s, long term care areas, home health care and other such areas. This organization is interested in improving the delivery of pharmaceutical care and technician training.

You will receive the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy. AJHP publishes papers written by clinicians, researchers, and practitioners, and communicates ways in which ASHP, its members, and the profession promote public health and participate in patient care.

4. Kentucky Society of Health-System Pharmacists - KSHP

This is the state association affiliated with ASHP. This association also holds two meetings per year, similar to KPhA, and also offers continuing education programs to the pharmacists of the state. This association encourages student involvement by asking students to serve as moderators, (i.e. introduce speakers before their presentations).

5. ASHP Pharmacy Student Forum

This is the UK College of Pharmacy student association affiliated with ASHP & KSHP. This organization offers programs such as the National Counseling Skills Competition where students compete at the local level for the opportunity to compete on the national level at the ASHP Mid-Year Meeting. Students are also given the opportunity to learn more about residency programs available nationally, and fourth year students are able to interview for residencies at the ASHP Mid-Year Meeting. This organization also encourages student leadership and policy development through participation in different councils and subcommittees including: Council on Administrative Affairs, Council on Educational Affairs, Council on Legal and Public Affairs, Council on Organizational Subcommittee, Meetings and Programming Subcommittee, Policy and Programming Subcommittee, Policy and Legislative Affairs Subcommittee, Student Society and Leadership Development Subcommittee, and the Technology and Publications Subcommittee. Students also have the opportunity to run for the national office for the Student Forum.

6. National Community Pharmacist Association - NCPA

This is the UKCOP association that is affiliated with NCPA. This organization offers opportunities such as the Pruitt-Schutte Student Business Plan Competition. This shows the students how to plan for pharmacy ownership, gaining insight into the acquisition of independent pharmacies through their creation from scratch, to buying into a current organization through junior partnerships. Through this organization students can become political as many issues currently affecting pharmacy today are heavily lobbied by independent pharmacies.

7. Additional Elective Memberships

American Pharmacy Services Corporation - APSC
This corporation is the state entity associated with NCPA. Their goal is to promote the independent pharmacy owner and meet their needs. They also have an active voice in the Kentucky state legislature.

8. Community and college involvement

Membership in KAPS allows students to become actively involved in a wide variety of activities, both in the community and within the college.

10. Reimbursement

Finally, reimbursement, through our participation in the KAPS points system, for travel to state and national meetings all over the country. Or for those students who are unable to travel, points count toward our annual KAPS raffle, giving you the opportunity to win prizes such as PDA software and more! Points can be earned by becoming a member of the Executive Committee, or by being a chair or committee head, by participating in a KAPS-sponsored event, or attending convocation on Thursdays.
